Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar
Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar
The Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is one of Zaragoza's most iconic symbols and one of the world's most important Marian shrines
...Located on the banks of the Ebro River, its imposing silhouette with towers and ceramic domes has become the city's most recognizable image.
The current church, in the Baroque style, began construction in the 17th century, although tradition places the apparition of Our Lady of the Pillar to the Apostle James on this very spot. Inside, the main altarpiece, the choir, and the murals by Francisco de Goya are particularly noteworthy, as is the Holy Chapel, which houses the image of the Virgin.
Beyond its religious significance, the basilica is an artistic and historical landmark, and one of Aragon's main cultural and tourist attractions. A visit is essential to understanding the identity and heritage of Zaragoza.
